4 Stars!
I really enjoyed The Alloy of Law! It was so much fun to be back in the Mistborn world but in such a different era. I loved the mix of frontier/wild west vibes with early industrialization - it gave the story a fresh energy while still keeping the magic systems that make this series so unique. The way Allomancy and Feruchemy are used in gunfights was just brilliant.
Wax was a solid main character - serious, weighed down by duty, but also deeply human - and I found myself liking him more as the book went on. But Wayne? Wayne absolutely stole the show for me. He’s funny, chaotic, and clever, and I loved every scene he was in. The dynamic between the two of them gave the book such a great balance of humour and tension.
The story itself moved quickly, with kidnappings, mysteries, shootouts, and political intrigue. Compared to the original Mistborn trilogy, the stakes feel smaller, but I actually liked that. It made the book lighter and easier to get through, while still delivering great action and some very cool Cosmere hints.
If I had one small critique, it’s that it feels a bit like a setup book—you can tell Sanderson is planting seeds for bigger things later in the series. But honestly, that just makes me more excited to keep reading.
Overall, this was a fun, witty, and fast-paced read. It didn’t quite reach the same emotional heights as the original trilogy for me, but I had such a good time with it.
