Priory of the Orange Tree

4 Stars

“A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens”

Priory of the Orage tree is one of the most beautifully written books I think I have ever read. The multiple POV’s did confuse me at first and I struggled to keep up in the beginning but once I got into it, I really enjoyed travelling to each character and seeing what they are going through.

Before going into this book, I saw many reviews that said this book was too long and a very slow burn, but this is exactly what I like in my books!

Samantha Shannon has created a beautiful world divided by politics and belief. This book has fantastic world building – lots of detail, layered cultures and a blend of eastern and western dragon lore. The characters- Ead, Sabran and Tané are written well, detailing their struggles that mirror the larger conflicts.

There is some sapphic romance, but all spice is fade to black (which is how I like it!). The relationship is tender yet powerful which adds an emotional depth to the political stakes.

Somes readers may find the pacing uneven, but others will appreciate the time given to fully immerse in the setting and lore. Priory of the Orange Tree is about Legacy, sacrifice, and unity, wrapped in dragons, magic and political tension. I would highly recommend this books to fans of epic fantasy and slow burns. Priory of the Orange Tree is both a challenge and a reward.
