Shadows of Self was such a fun continuation of Wax and Wayne’s story! I loved getting back into Scadrial and seeing how the world is adjusting to its modernizing changes. The political intrigue really stepped up in this one, and I found myself caught up in the schemes and mysteries in Elendel. It feels like Sanderson is building a bigger, layered picture of the city, and I enjoyed all the little hints at how the Cosmere threads are tying together.
Wax is even more complex here - he’s still carrying all that duty and guilt, but you get to see him grow a bit more, and I liked how his relationship with Steris developed too. Wayne continues to be my absolute favourite; his antics, clever schemes, and hilarious lines kept me smiling even during tense moments. Their friendship is honestly the best part of this series for me.
The plot moves quickly, with high stakes, clever twists, and some fantastic action scenes. I did feel that some of the political scheming slowed things down a little in parts, but overall, it kept me engaged. The book balances humour, action, and worldbuilding perfectly, and I loved how Sanderson keeps making the magic feel fresh in a modernized setting.
Overall, I had such a good time with this one. It’s fast-paced, clever, and a perfect blend of fun and tension. Definitely solidifies Wax and Wayne as one of my favourite duos in fantasy.
